Choosing your wedding photographer can seem a daunting task when you already have so many big decisions to make about your special day. The venue, the cake, the wedding bands, the music, the food, the suit, the dress, the ‘should I sit aunty Rita on the same table as her nemesis, uncle John?’… the list goes on.
Arguably, the wedding photos will be your most treasured item from the day, transporting you back in time whenever you look at them over the years to come.
So, with such importance placed upon the photography… how do you choose your wedding photographer?
Find your style
There are thousands of wedding photographers out there, each with their own individual style, so my first bit of advice would be to work out what you like as a couple. A quick google search of photographers in your area should bring up a long list, take a look at their portfolio images (you can view mine here) and have a think about why you like the ones you’re drawn to the most. Do you like reportage, contemporary, creative or more traditional types of photography?
This sort of analysis will really help when it comes to communicating what you’d like from your chosen photographer.
Define your budget
Wedding photographers’ prices can vary dramatically, so it’s important you’re not wasting time by contacting people who are over your budget. Equally, we believe you’ll get back what you put in with a photographer, so while it’s worth looking at for your ideal price, it’s also worth considering going slightly over if you find ‘the one’!
Research the photographer’s approach
Think about what sort of approach you’d be most comfortable with on your big day, which can often be a time filled with nerves. Researching how different photographers work will help you decide which way of working resonates with you the most. Do you need someone very hands-on to guide you with poses or would you be more at ease with someone who blends into the background and captures those candid moments unnoticed?
Elliot and I have a warm and open approach, which allows us to create a comfortable atmosphere for you and your wedding guests. We’ll discuss your needs and requirements well in advance so there won’t be any surprises on the day!
Check they’re in your area or willing to travel
The last thing you want to dampen your excitement about finding an amazing photographer is then discovering they’re not local or willing to travel to your venue.
Elliot and I are based in the beautiful West Sussex countryside, but we love to explore! We’re happy to travel anywhere within the UK and beyond for your special day. No matter where you are, we can provide you with exceptional, creative wedding photography.
Book a pre-wedding shoot
Having an engagement or couples shoot is a fantastic way to get to know your photographer and see how they work. It’s our job to make you feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera, which any wedding photographer worth their salt should know how to do.
Pre-wedding shoots with us can include maternity and new family sessions too so if you have opted to have a baby while waiting for weddings to get back to normal, these are a great opportunity to get warmed up.
Engagement shoots are a really great way for us to get to know each other and warm up in preparation for the big day. It may seem like an extra expense when you’re already saving every penny for your wedding day, but these types of pre-wedding shoots not only help you decide if you’re working with the right photographer (and as we’ve established, it’s an incredibly important choice) but you’ll have some beautiful photos to cherish from your pre-married life too!
How my pre-wedding shoots work
I shoot engagements on my own as I find that it’s a slightly more gentle introduction to being the star of your show! I also come to your home area ( as long as it’s within an hour’s drive from Horsham) and let you choose your favourite spot.
With all my portrait shoots, I say that the first half an hour of shooting doesn’t count, so that nobody feels too pressured and I always find that the results show how quickly everyone forgets the camera and starts having fun.

Our wedding clients are also entitled to a 50% deduction on all extra shoots if booked within a year before or after their wedding date. So remember us if you plan new family members!
Read the photographers testimonials
If a wedding photographer has surpassed the couple’s expectations, it’ll shine through in a testimonial. Hearing what other people have to say about your photographer can really solidify your choice. So, do your research and read some reviews.
I hope that applying these tips to your wedding photography search will help you feel less overwhelmed and give you a good place to start with knowing what you want.
